Mental Hospital Research

West Park Mental Hospital (West Park Hospital)

Built in the 1920's West Park was the Eleventh and last in a long line of asylums serving the London area forming the filth and final part of the "Epsom Cluster"  A complex of 5 large Psychiatric and epileptic hospitals. (Other hospitals Being: Manor, Horton, St Ebbas and Long Grove.)

Until recently recently several parts of west park were well used as research labs, a nurses training center and a cottage hospital. Other than this activity has scaled down and many of the buildings are now empty and abandoned.

When i think of a dangerous world i think of not only streets but prisions and metal hospitals because the people inside them have done some thing dangerous enough to been locked away. I then found an abandoned metal hospital in epsom which added a whole new asspect, not only is it dangous bescause of who is in it but also what is in it such as padded cells & things such as straight jackets .

As West Park Hospital is now abandoned i needed permission, once id found out who owned the building i got in touch with the local council (Epsom). Getting permission became almost impossible, eventally i got through to the right department and a tour was aranged for me. I was toured around the building for 30 minutes wearing the nessasary safty clothing. I was very grateful of Epsom Council as these photos made my project become alot more intesting.

I turnt all of these photographs from colour to black and white because it helped take the life away from the hospital. Most of these object such as the paper work and needles have been left exactly how they would have been the day it was abandoned which made it seem in some ways still in use.
