Nan Goldin - I'll Be Your Mirror

Nan Goldin is the impassioned historian of love in the age of sexuality, glamour, beauty, violence, death, intoxication, and masquerade. Her work is my main influence towards make up because many of the people she photographs are using make up to hide some thing for example abuse, its a running theme through out her work. In my work i have used make up to hide emotion and to create more expression yet Nan Goldin has used make up in a slictly different way, she has kept the make up to a minimal so the hidden meaning behind the make up is clearly on show.

'For me taking a picture is a way of touching somebody - it's caress. I'm looking with a warm eye, not a cold eye. I'm not analyzing what's going on - I just get inspired to take a picture by the beauty and venerability of my friends." Nan Goldin Quote.

Researching Make Up

At the start of the project i had a photo shot which i asked the model to express face expressions and emotions such as anger and fear, after the photographs were developed i noticed a pattern with in the photos, Make-up. i used make up to my advantage making the expression seem a lot more extreme for example the photograph below.

Peter Robb King - Make Up Artist

I started researching make up artists and found a comment pattern Peter Robb King was the head make up artists to huge films such as "Batman The Dark Knight" and "Dracula" which were common films that came to mind when i thought about extreme make up.

The Dark Knight (2008) (makeup department head)

Batman Begins (2005) (hair designer) (makeup designer)

The Matrix Revolutions (2003) (makeup department head)

Alien³ (1992) (makeup supervisor)

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989) (makeup supervisor)
